On Wednesday morning, Bud Elliot and Ingram Smith of Tomahawk Nation reported that Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher is a real candidate to be the next coach of the Texas A&M Aggies. The relevant part of the podcast is that Texas A&M sources believe Fisher will take the job.

Reports about Texas A&M being interested in Fisher started around Nov. 14, when USA Today and Dan Wolken confirmed that the Aggies planned on firing head coach Kevin Sumlin and pursuing Fisher. Factors like Fisher’s relationship with Texas A&M athletic director Scott Woodward are apparently a driving force.

Tomahawk Nation’s report is the first major source from a Florida State-focused publication to lend credibility to the rumors. While it might not be confirmed at the moment, the fact that it is a serious possibility is concerning for Florida State.

Fisher was involved with similar rumors last year when the LSU Tigers began their head coaching search. Last year’s talks were a bit more superficial. This year’s might genuinely be legitimate.

Florida State is not a bad program of course. If Fisher were to leave, the Seminoles would not have trouble filling the spot. The buyout that Texas A&M would pay would allow the school to have a considerable amount of money to spend.

Still, such a move would be upsetting to fans for a number of reasons. Perhaps the biggest reason is that Fisher would leave after one down year at a school that he won a national championship with.

Pieces about that will come later. For now, just know that there is some legitimacy behind the Fisher-A&M rumors.
