Delaware State at FSU: Good Times, Bad Times

Michael Schwarz/FSU athletics

Florida State will celebrate Senior Day and homecoming and most likely a victory on Saturday as the Seminoles welcome in Delaware State. FSU is just 3-6 on the year, but still a game and a half better than the Hornets, out of the MEAC conference of FCS, who are 2-8.

Each week, we take a look at the history between FSU and its opponent in a segment we call, “Good Times, Bad Times”. Since this will be the first meeting between the schools, we’ll have to improvise:

All-Time Series: First Meeting
Good Times: Florida State and Delaware State have never met, but the Seminoles are 12-0 against FCS opponents since 2005 and 8-0 under head coach Jimbo Fisher. The largest margin of victory for FSU over an FCS opponent under Fisher was 69-3 over Murray State to open the 2010 campaign. FSU and Delaware State have never met head-to-head in any sport, according to our friends at NoleFan.org.

Bad Times: FSU hasn’t had any egregious losses to FCS losses, but there have been a few close calls. The most notable came in 2009 when the Seminoles trailed Jacksonville State, 9-7, with less than a minute to play. Ty Jones’ short touchdown run put FSU ahead for good before Kevin McNeil scooped up a fumble and returned it for a score in a 19-9 victory.

In 1988, FSU trailed Georgia Southern 10-7 in the final quarter before scoring three unanswered touchdowns in a 28-10 win. In 2005, FSU trailed The Citadel late in the first half, 10-3, before scoring 10 points late in the half and the game’s final 59 points in a 62-10 win.
