Baseball is back in Tallahassee — at least for the weekend. Florida State played the first game of a 2-game intrasquad scrimmage on Thursday with the Garnet squad downing the Gold 7-2 in seven innings.

Andrew Karp and Tyler Holton both got the starting nods for their respective sides and turned in two innings apiece. Karp held the Gold team scoreless, while the Garnet team was able to manage one run off of Holton.

Junior catcher Cal Raleigh led the way at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs. J.C. Flowers also turned in a 3-hit performance on the afternoon.

A few transfers made an impact at the plate as well. Graduate transfer Rafael Bournigal played second for the Garnet team and had an RBI double. Bournigal’s father, also named Rafael played for the Seminoles. The Los Angeles Dodgers drafted Bournigal’s father in the 19th round of the 1987 Major League draft.

Michael Salvator was the lone Nole to leave the yard in the scrimmage as the junior transfer from Florida State College hit a 2-run home run off of Cobi Johnson. Salvator finished the day with two hits.

It did not go well for all as redshirt senior Ed Voyles walked four, and threw a wild pitch. Johnson’s outing probably did not go as well as planned, surrendering up the only home run of the day. Although he gets the pass, this was Johnson’s first outing in Tallahassee since he hurt his arm pitching against Florida in 2016 and later underwent Tommy John Surgery.

Florida State will hold a second scrimmage Friday at 6 p.m. EST at Dick Howser Stadium followed by a match-up with the Ontario Blue Jays on Monday.
