FSU’s All-Time Record in Every 2017 Road City

Florida State will play away from the friendly confines of Doak Campbell Stadium six times during the regular season in 2017. The Seminoles hope to play three more away from Tallahassee with an ACC Championship and College Football Playoff contests.

Looking at FSU’s road venues for 2017, the Seminoles have a history of both success and failure in some of the cities. Here’s a look at FSU’s all-time record at each place it will play this season, excluding Tallahassee:

City: Atlanta, GA
Opponent: Alabama (Sept. 2)
All-Time Record: 8-11-1
Overview: Florida State’s all-time record in Atlanta isn’t a good one, but it has gotten better over the years. FSU went 0-8-1 in its first nine trips to Georgia’s capital city with all but one of those losses coming to Georgia Tech in road contests. Since then, FSU is 8-3-1, but two of the three losses came during the 2015 campaign. That year, the Seminoles lost at Georgia Tech and to Houston in the Peach Bowl.

City: Winston-Salem, NC
Opponent: Wake Forest (Sept. 30)
All-Time Record: 8-3
Overview: Every FSU contest in Winston-Salem has been against Wake Forest. It may seem like a surprise given that FSU’s football history only dates back to 1947, but the first nine contests were in Tallahassee. The Demon Deacons won the first meeting in Winston-Salem in 1973 and the schools didn’t meet again until FSU joined the ACC in 1992. Since then, FSU is 7-2 at Wake Forest. The victories for the Demon Deacons came in 2007 and 2011.

City: Durham, NC
Opponent: Duke (Oct. 14)
All-Time Record: 7-0
Overview: Each of Florida State’s seven trips to Durham have been against Duke. The Seminoles have never lost there and will be returning to Durham this season for the first time since 2011. The closest win in the series was a 51-27 decision back in 1997.

City: Chestnut Hill, MA
Opponent: Boston College (Oct. 27)
All-Time Record: 6-2
Overview: With the exception of split contests in 1957 and 1976, almost all of Florida State’s trips to Chestnut Hill have been since the Eagles joined the ACC in 2005. FSU’s 28-17 win that year was the first conference game ever for Boston College as a member of the ACC. In the next trip to Chestnut Hill for the Seminoles in 2007, FSU upset the No. 2 Eagles, 27-17. The lone Boston College victory at home in conference play came by a 28-21 score in 2009.

City: Clemson, SC
Opponent: Clemson (Nov. 11)
All-Time Record: 8-6
Overview: It may come as a surprise, but Florida State has managed to go just 6-6 at Clemson since joining the ACC. The Tigers have won six of the last seven over the Seminoles in Death Valley with the exception being a 51-14 beatdown by the Seminoles in a top 5 match-up back in 2013. The only two contests at Clemson prior to FSU joining the ACC were wins for the Seminoles. The most famous was the 24-21 victory in the “puntrooskie” game back in 1988.

City: Gainesville, FL
Opponent: Florida (Nov. 25)
All-Time Record: 11-20-1
Overview: Like every other venue on the list except one, Florida State has played only one opponent in Gainesville. The first six contests between Florida State and Florida were held in Gainesville with the Gators going 5-0-1. The last three meetings between the schools in the storied “Swamp” however, have gone FSU’s way with the Seminoles taking a shutout into the fourth quarter each time. Prior to a 27-2 win in 2015, FSU had never won more than two straight in Gainesville.
