Season Ends in NCAA Championships for FSU Men’s Golf

Florida State’s men’s golf team needed an outstanding day to keep its season alive as it was one of 15 teams to make the cut and advance to the fourth round of the NCAA Championships. Unfortunately, Monday would be the worst day of the tournament for FSU.

The Seminoles finished the day with a combined team score of 321. It was the worst score among teams who advanced past the third round.

As a result, Florida State will finish the NCAA Championships tied with UCF for 14th place. 30 teams arrived in Sugar Grove, Illinois for the championships, but that field was cut in half after the third round on Sunday. Overall, FSU finishes the tournament at +29.

Over the four rounds, Florida State was never better than 11th at the end of any day and entered Monday tied for 12th. Unfortunately for the Seminoles, the 2016-17 season comes to an end, but eight teams saw their national championship hopes stay alive, led by Vanderbilt at -13.

The seven other teams to advance to match play include in order: Oklahoma, Illinois, Oklahoma State, Oregon, USC, Baylor and UNLV. Oregon and USC tied for fifth at +6. Baylor and UNLV tied for seventh at +7. LSU finished in ninth place, missing the cut by two strokes at +9.

Individually, Ole Miss’ Braden Thornberry was the top performer at -11, finishing four strokes better than Arkansas’ Mason Overstreet. Scottie Scheffler of Texas was the leader entering Monday, but shot +6 for the final round to finish tied for third at -6. The top player for FSU for the tournament was Cristobal Del Solar, who finished tied for 28th at +2.
