Prior to last Thursday, Louisville had lost in its home city just twice all season. Since then, it has not lost three times to Florida State.

On the final day of pool play at the ACC Tournament on Friday, FSU defeated top-seeded Louisville, 6-2, to move to within one win of its third straight appearance in the ACC Championship. The No. 8 seed Seminoles will face No. 9 seed Duke in the first of two semifinals on Saturday.

The Good: Tyler Holton gave Florida State yet another outstanding start on Friday, yielding just two runs and one earned in eight innings of work. Holton walked just one and struck out 10 in the victory.

The Bad: Entering Friday’s contest, the Seminoles had been playing very good defense. FSU had committed just three errors in its previous 12 games, but committed as many in the victory. Taylor Walls, Dylan Busby and Cal Raleigh were each guilty of one.

The Ugly: FSU head coach Mike Martin was forced to make two trips out to argue calls during the bottom of the third inning. On a bunt single by Jake Snider, Louisville’s Pat Rumoro slipped rounding second base and appeared to be tagged out by FSU third baseman Dylan Busby before getting back to the bag, but was called safe. Later in the inning, Loagn Taylor was called safe on a very close play at second after the ball trickled away from Seminoles’ catcher Cal Raleigh.

Studs of the Game: For his work on the mound, Holton certainly deserves recognition for FSU. To atone for errors in the field, Walls and Busby each went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Jackson Lueck was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs. Matt Henderson also drove in a pair of runs. Louisville’s Brendan McKay had two of the four hits for the Cardinals, including a solo home run.

Duds of the Game: For Louisville, Logan Taylor, Devin Hairston, Drew Ellis and Devin Mann were all 0-for-4 at the dish. J.C. Flowers and Steven Wells were each 0-for-4 for the Seminoles with five combined strikeouts. Flowers however, did make an outstanding play in center field to save two runs to end the fourth inning.
