Florida State Manages Two Hits in Shutout Loss to Virginia

Clint Eiland/The Daily Nole

The Florida State Seminoles were held scoreless on Saturday afternoon, managing just two hits as the Virginia Cavaliers beat them 8-0. The score was close for about half of the game, but a shift in momentum midway through let Virginia run away with it.

The Good: Virginia batting caught fire midway through the contest. The Cavaliers were largely in the same boat as the Seminoles when it came batting in the first half of the game. That all changed in the fifth inning when they started getting hot at the plate. In the next two innings, they tallied nine hits and turned those into seven runs. It was pretty impressive watching batter after batter hit it right into the exact spots that no one on FSU could get to in time. By the end of the game, Virginia had accumulated 16 total hits.

The Bad:
FSU pitchers not named Tyler Holton struggled mightily. Holton himself was decent, only giving up five hits in over four innings. But after him was a list of Clayton Kwiatkowski, Jim Voyles, Alec Byrd, Will Zirzow, and Grant Stewart. They all combined to allow 11 hits and six earned runs, with only Zirzow lasting more than one inning. Virginia was only up 2-0 after the fifth inning. Florida State could’ve mounted a comeback if it had kept the margin slim. Obviously that did not work out.

The Ugly: Florida State batting never showed up on Saturday. The Seminoles had an abysmal two hits on the afternoon, good for a .067 overall hitting percentage. Despite having a completely healthy lineup, no one made an impact at the plate as the Seminoles got blanked for zero runs.

Studs of the Game: Virginia starting pitcher Noah Murdock dealt nothing but heat from the mound. In six innings pitched, Murdock gave up only two hits and no runs. When it came to hitting, Adam Haseley went 3-for-5 at the plate with one run and an RBI.

Duds of the Game:
Jim Voyles pitched less than an inning for Florida State. In that time, he gave up three hits and four earned runs before being pulled.

Extra Innings:
If you had to park near Dick Howser Stadium, God bless you. Perhaps having three big events in succession in the same area was not the greatest planning in the world.
