Florida State scored more runs on Tuesday night than it had in its previous five games with Florida combined. Unfortunately for the Seminoles, the result was the same.
The Gators were able to outslug FSU at Dick Howser Stadium, 10-7. With the win, Florida sweeps the season series and has now won 15 of 18 against its rivals to the north.
The Good: Unlike it its previous meetings against Florida, the Seminoles showed some offense on Tuesday night. Taylor Walls homered to lead off the game during a 2-run first inning. FSU had scored just one total run in its previous four games against the Gators, but scored in five different innings on Tuesday and put up multiple runs twice. The seven runs is the most for FSU against Florida since March 2015.
The Bad: Despite being given an early lead, the Florida State pitching staff struggled. Andrew Karp, the starter, lasted less than two innings, giving up four runs and three earned. Chase Haney allowed four earned runs in just two innings and Will Zirzow gave up two runs without recording an out.
The Ugly: Florida State continues to kick the ball around defensively. The Seminoles made three errors on Tuesday night, leading to an unearned run. Florida committed two errors, which also led to an unearned run. FSU also got the raw end of a missed call in the second on a hard hit ball down the line by Rhett Aplin. The hit appeared to be fair and probably would have scored two runs, but was ruled foul. FSU managed just one run in the frame.
Studs of the Game: The bottom of the Florida order which includes Jonathan India, Ryan Larson and Christian Hicks combined to go 6-for-12 with four runs scored and eight RBIs. For FSU, Walls had two hits, including the solo homer and two RBIs. Freshman Drew Mendoza was 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Duds of the Game: Haney and Zirzow earn this distinction for the Seminoles, combining to allow six earned runs in just two innings. Florida shortstop Dalton Guthrie was 0-for-5 at the dish.
