FSU Spring Game: Game Balls

The 2017 spring has come to an end for Florida State. The Seminoles held their annual spring game on Saturday with the Gold team defeating the Garnet in a defensive struggle, 17-7.

With players sitting, wearing non-contact jerseys and makeshift units like at wide receiver and the offensive line, it’s sometimes hard to tell much from the spring game. Despite that, there were some players who stood high above the rest on Saturday. The Daily Nole staff of editor Mike Ferguson, lead writer Clint Eiland and Jay Brading hand out their game balls for Saturday’s performance:

Offense

Unanimous Game Ball: Cam Akers, RB
It was just a spring game, but early enrollee Cam Akers looked as good as advertised. Akers finished with a game-high 102 yards of offense on 12 touches. That included 10 carries for 87 yards on the ground and two receptions for 15 yards. Akers also had the most electrifying play of the day with a 35-yard run.

Defense

Unanimous Game Ball: Derwin James, S
If you think Florida State didn’t miss safety Derwin James in 2016, think again. After playing in just two games last season, the redshirt sophomore showed just what he can do for a defense on Saturday. James was all over the field, finishing with a game-high seven tackles, including three for loss and two sacks. James also had a massive hit to break up a fourth down pass late in the first half.

Special Team

Unanimous Game Ball: Logan Tyler, P
Special teams is virtually non-existent during spring games, but sophomore punter Logan Tyler hit the ball well. Tyler punted 13 times, averaging 43.5 yards per punt, including an absolute boomer that went 59 yards and out the back of the end zone.
