The Daily Nole — March 28, 2017: FSU to Retire Drew’s Jersey

It’s Tuesday, Florida State fans. Monday may have not ended the way we wanted it to for Florida State’s women’s basketball team, but it is a new day. We’ll try to get you through it by updating the news and notes section.

Next month, one Florida State baseball legend will be immortalized. In a release sent Monday, FSU announced it would retire the No. 39 jersey of former Golden Spikes Award winner, J.D. Drew.

Arguably the best player ever to play at FSU, Drew was a 2-time Consensus All-American, hitting .391 with 69 home runs over the course of his career. As a junior in 1997, Drew not only won the Golden Spikes Award, but he became the first 30-30 man in college baseball history.

The former outfielder’s jersey will be retired on April 15 when the Seminoles take on Clemson. A 2016 National College Baseball Hall of Fame inductee, Drew will become just the second FSU baseball player to have his jersey retired, along with Dick Howser.

Between the Lines

Florida State’s women’s basketball team fell in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament to top-seeded South Carolina on Monday, 71-64.

On the Agenda

FSU baseball will take on Florida in Jacksonville on Tuesday night.

News and Notes

FSU running back Jacques Patrick did not participate in Monday’s scrimmage, head coach Jimbo Fisher said.

FSU’s Pro Day will be held on Tuesday.

FSU outfielder Carsyn Gordon and pitcher Jessica Burroughs each earned weekly softball honors from the ACC.

Florida State remained No. 1 in the USA Today softball poll.

Florida State’s April 8 spring game will air on ESPN at 3 p.m. EST.

Two FSU track and field athletes earned weekly honors from the ACC.

Florida State is among the two remaining finalists for 4-star defensive back Christian Tutt. The other is Alabama.

Florida State fell to rival Florida for a 14th time in 17 tries on Tuesday night in Jacksonville, 4-1.
