After getting shut out by rival Florida on Tuesday night, Florida State wasted little time getting started on Wednesday with two runs in the first inning. Unfortunately for the Seminoles, that’s all they could muster in a 5-2 road loss to Florida Gulf Coast.

The Eagles wasted little time answering with three runs in the bottom of the first. They added one in the third and one more in the eighth to hand FSU its second straight loss and third in five games.

The Good: Both bullpens had a pretty good night. FSU starter Ed Voyles was shelled in his third of an inning of work, but the pen combined to throw 7 2/3 innings of 2-hit ball, allowing two runs. Three different Florida Gulf Coast relievers combined to throw five shutout innings, yielding just one hit.

The Bad: Ed Voyles was completely ineffective in the midweek start for the Seminoles. Voyles allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits in just 1/3 of an inning. Voyles faced only five batters, which forced five FSU relievers into action.

The Ugly: The runs for FSU were again few, but it wasn’t for a lack of opportunities. For the night, FSU left 15 men on base. The Seminoles couldn’t make FGCU pay for issuing nine walks and hitting three batters.

Studs of the Game: Junior outfielder Eli Lovell was 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored for the Eagles. Reliever Kenton Hering retired all five batters he faced, striking out three to get the win. Cal Raleigh was just 1-for-5 for FSU, but drove in both Seminole runs.

Duds of the Game: Ed Voyles had a night to forget for FSU on the mound. At the plate, lead-off man Taylor Walls was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. Gage Morey was 0-for-3 with a strikeout for FGCU.
