Track Star Chauncy Smart Won’t Attend FSU

Highly-touted sprinter Chauncy Smart won’t be attending Florida State, a source confirmed to The Daily Nole on Tuesday morning.

Smart has been granted a release, according to the source and will pursue another school. The source told The Daily Nole that a lot of factors went into Smart’s decision to pursue a career elsewhere, including his desire to play college football.

Smart told The Daily Nole in November that he planned to try his hand at being a 2-sport athlete at FSU. The NCAA does not permit athletes on track and field scholarships to walk on as football players.

“Juggling football and track is quite a bit in high school,” he said in November. “I know it’s not going to come easy, it’s going to be a lot of hard work, so I might as well just get used to it now.”

FSU will not grant Smart a release for any other track scholarship. His release is contingent on him getting a scholarship, according to the school.

A 5-8, 160-pound speedster, Smart committed to Florida State during the fall. Smart has yet to make a decision as to where he will attend instead.
