The Daily Nole — Feb. 6, 2017: Freeman Has Big Night in Super Bowl Loss

Lead Story

Former Florida State and current Atlanta Falcons’ running back Devonta Freeman was on the wrong side of the biggest collapse in Super Bowl history, but overall, the third-year star had a productive night.

On a night in which his team blew a 25-point lead in a 34-28 loss to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LI, Freeman finished with 121 yards from scrimmage on just 13 touches. Freeman rushed for 75 yards on 11 carries and scored the game’s first touchdown from five yards out. Freeman also caught a pair of passes for 46 yards.

After finishing with more than 1,500 yards from scrimmage during the regular season, Freeman added 330 more in three postseason games. Freeman was a Pro Bowl selection in each of the last two seasons.

Between the Lines

FSU’s men’s basketball team defeated Clemson, 109-61 on Sunday. It was the largest margin of victory for FSU in ACC play ever.

On the Agenda

FSU’s men’s golf team will compete in the Sea Best Invitational at Ponte Vedra Beach. The FSU women’s basketball team will host Miami on Monday. The contest begins at 7 p.m. EST and airs on Raycom Sports Network.

News and Notes

FSU’s men’s basketball team rose a spot in both the AP and USA Today Coaches Poll. The Seminoles now sit at No. 14 in the AP Poll and No. 15 in the Coaches. The women’s team moved up one spot in the AP Poll to No. 5.

The ACC will name players of the week for various sports.

Florida State’s Cal Raleigh and Taylor Walls were each named second-team preseason All-Americans by D1Baseball.com.

FSU’s softball team has been picked as the favorite to win the ACC.
