FSU Hoops Doubles Up on Southern Miss, 98-49

It was complete domination at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center on Tuesday night as Florida State annihilated Southern Mississippi 98-49 to pick up its fourth straight win.

FSU (8-1) never trailed in the contest, shooting 60 percent from the field and a stellar 14-for-29 from beyond the 3-point arc. Four different Seminoles scored in double-figures led by P.J. Savoy, who finished with a career-high 27 points, thanks to seven triples in just his third career game.

Jarquez Smith finished with a season-high 14 points and two blocks. Leading scorer Dwayne Bacon was held to 13 points, but got plenty of help. Like Savoy, Brandon Allen, a walk-on, scored a career-high with 10 points in the win.

FSU led 48-26 at the break and by as many as 51 in the second half. For the fourth straight game, FSU held its opponent below 33 percent shooting. It was the second straight game in which the Seminoles held their opponent to fewer than 50 points.

As a team, Southern Mississippi (3-4) shot just 30 percent from the field. Eddie Davis III led the team with 17 points while Cortez Edwards added 11 in the loss.

Both teams were without their leading rebounder and second-leading scorer as Jonathan Isaac sat for the Seminoles with a hip flexor and Tim Rowe, a 6-11 forward, missed a second straight contest for the Golden Eagles. Rowe’s absent, needless to say, was more noticeable although FSU’s rebounding advantage was slim statistically, 36-31.

The Seminoles will play their third game in six days on Thursday night as the host Nicholls State. Southern Miss will return home on Saturday to face Tulane.
