FSU-Boston College: Game Balls

Florida State played its most complete game of the season against FBS competition on Friday night and perhaps overall with a dominating 45-7 victory over Boston College. Five different Seminoles scored touchdowns in the win while the FSU defense held the Eagles to just 146 yards of total offense.

Winning as easily as Florida State did, there was obviously a number of strong individual performances. The Daily Nole staff of editor Mike Ferguson, lead writer Clint Eiland, recruiting analyst Jay Brading and contributors T.J. Pittinger and Robert Blackburn sort out the best of the best by handing out game balls:

Offense

Mike, Jay, T.J., Robert: Auden Tate, WR
For a second straight week, sophomore wide receiver Auden Tate had a career-night. Tate finished with six catches — many spectacular — for a game-high 101 yards receiving and two touchdowns on Friday night. Tate’s two touchdown grabs gives him a team-high six for the year.

Clint: Deondre Francois, QB
FSU redshirt freshman Deondre Francois continues to stand tall in the pocket and make throws. In Friday’s victory, Francois finished 16-for-24 passing for 183 yards and three touchdowns before leaving with a shoulder injury. Francois also aided the FSU ground attack with 15 yards rushing.

Defense

Mike, Jay, Robert: Matthew Thomas, LB
Redshirt junior Matthew Thomas had perhaps his best game of the season on Friday with a hard-hitting effort that culminated in a team-high six tackles, including two for loss. Five of Thomas’ six stops were solo tackles and all of them seemed to make plenty of noise.

Clint: Josh Sweat, DE
Defensive end Josh Sweat’s progress as a sophomore continues to be seen on the field. Sweat did an excellent job setting the edge on Friday night en route to a 4-tackle effort with 0.5 sacks.

T.J.: Jacob Pugh, LB
Though junior Jacob Pugh finished with just one sack, he got constant pressure on Boston College quarterback Patrick Towles. Pugh has largely played in the shadow of DeMarcus Walker and Derrick Nnadi this season, but has been reliable as a pass-rusher.

Special Teams

Unanimous Game Ball: Logan Tyler, P
Freshman punter Logan Tyler averaged nearly 40 yards per punt and had five of his eight kickoffs go for touchbacks, but Tyler made the most noise on his first career field goal attempt. With FSU leading 35-0 in the fourth quarter, Tyler was put in to try a 53-yard field goal. His kick cleared the crossbar by about three yards, making for the longest field goal this season by an FSU kicker.
