There might not be a Florida State football game this Saturday, but FSU men’s hoops starts its season and the FSU soccer team kicks off its run at a fifth straight College Cup appearance. The news and notes section for this post will be updated throughout the day.

Lead Story

Florida State soccer will kick off its bid to reach the College Cup — or national semifinals — for a fifth straight season on Saturday. After winning a fourth straight ACC crown, the Seminoles will open the NCAA Tournament at home against Samford.

The Seminoles did not have the regular season that they had hoped and will come in as No. 3 seed in their bracket at 13-3-4. That means FSU could be forced to leave Tallahassee as early as the round of 16 if second-seeded USC wins a pair of matches.

Before FSU can even think about that, it will need to beat Samford, who is 15-3-2 on the year. Jermaine Seoposenwe leads the Bulldogs with 16 goals this year and is in a 4-way tie for the team lead with six assists. Megan Connolly and Deyna Castellanos each have six goals this season for FSU while goalkeeper Cassie Miller has allowed just seven goals in 20 matches.

The winner will face either Utah or Texas Tech in the round of 32. Saturday’s match begins at 2 p.m. and will air on ESPN3.

Between the Lines

FSU defeated Boston College 45-7 on the gridiron on Friday and in four sets on the volleyball court, 22-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-18. Katie Horton finished with 13 digs and 10 kills to lead FSU.

At the NCAA South Regional, the FSU men’s cross country team finished fifth among 21 teams while the women placed seventh among 30. Behind 16 points from Shakayla Thomas, FSU’s women’s basketball team kicked off the season with a 73-62 victory over Jacksonville State.

On the Agenda

Aside from FSU soccer facing Samford, the FSU men’s basketball team will host Charleston Southern to open the 2016-17 season. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. EST and the contest will air on ACC Network Extra.
