FSU’s Iradukunda Claims Regional Title

Florida State’s Guy Iradukunda was the guy on Monday as the junior defeated Georgia’s Wayne Montgomery in three sets to win the ITA Southeast Regional men’s singles championship in Tallahassee.

Iradukunda bounced back after dropping the first set 3-6 to win the next two in convincing fashion, 6-1, 6-3. Montgomery entered the regional as the top seed, but was no match for the FSU junior.

Iradukunda overcame a first set loss for the second straight day to win his match. On Sunday, he defeated Miami’s Piotr Lomacki 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals before taking down Georgia’s Walker Duncan in straight sets.

By winning the regional, Iradukunda clinches an automatic berth in the 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships i Flushing Meadows, New York. Those championships will be held Nov. 3-6.
