The Daily Nole — Sept. 29, 2016: ACC Championship Officially Set for Orlando

Jeremy Esbrandt/FSU athletics

We’re one day from Florida State’s athletic programs being back in action and just two days from the Seminoles facing North Carolina on the gridiron. Throughout the day, we’ll keep you posted on the latest big news involving FSU athletics. The news and notes section of this post will be updated.

Lead Story

The speculation is over. The 2016 ACC Championship to decide the conference’s premier football power has been moved to Camping World Stadium in Orlando.

The Dec. 3 contest between the ACC’s Atlantic and Coastal winner was originally scheduled for Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, but the conference decided to pull all neutral site championships from the state of North Carolina as a way of showing opposition to HB2 — a controversial bathroom law that prohibits transgender people from using public bathrooms of their choice.

Moving the game to Orlando marks the first time the ACC Championship has been played in the state of Florida since 2009 when Clemson and Georgia Tech met in Tampa. The inaugural conference title game was played in Jacksonville in 2005.

For the Seminoles to get back to Orlando, where they opened the 2016 campaign, they’ll likely have to run the table and hope for a 3-way tie involving Clemson and Louisville. In 11 previous seasons with a conference championship, FSU played for the ACC crown five times.

Between the Lines

There were no FSU athletic events held Wednesday.

On the Agenda

There are no events scheduled for Thursday, but four FSU programs will be in action on Friday.

News and Notes

FSU baseball pitcher Chase Haney was recognized with the school’s Golden Torch Award this week. The award recognizes achievement in the classroom. Haney was one of four Seminoles to make the ACC’s All-Academic team last season.

Florida State defensive end Josh Sweat will play Saturday against North Carolina, according to head coach Jimbo Fisher. Sweat sat out last week against South Florida after having minor surgery on his left knee.
