Florida State redshirt senior quarterback Sean Maguire is one of 40 quarterbacks named to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award preseason watch list.

The award named after Louisville great and long-time Baltimore Colts’ quarterback Johnny Unitas recognizes the quarterback who best combines athletic achievement with character, leadership and citizenship.

Maguire was 3-2 in five starts for Florida State last season, finishing with a completion rate of greater than 59 percent, 1,520 yards passing and 11 touchdowns compared to six interceptions. Hampered by a bad foot, Maguire threw four interceptions his last time out in a Peach Bowl loss to Houston.

The injury forced Maguire to miss all of spring practice and the fifth-year senior is now in a heated quarterback competition with redshirt freshman Deondre Francois. Maguire hopes to be the guy under center for FSU when it opens the season against Ole Miss in Orlando on Sept. 5. Last year’s Unitas Golden Arm Award went to Michigan State’s Connor Cook.
